Primary evidence hereby given that you can't "be as good as your last game". Instead, the adage that you're only as good (or bad) as your next one most certainly ran true for Nigel Tomlinson and I when paired together for a third successive match.
Not just on the bowling green, but sport in general can kick you in the nether regions when least expected and Farington Con's pair, John Ashworth and Paul Richmond, provided the proverbial ball ache.
Despite a rosey looking start, I was struggling to get near enough against two guys playing well and Nige wasn't up to his usual standards either which stirred up the recipe for a comprehensive defeat. Considering we only scored seven, it did feel like we were on the green for quite a while, but there was an air of inevitability at our plight. On only the odd occasion John's lead bowl wasn't good enough, Paul played some blinders from the back.
We tried to break through, but to no avail and couldn't keep hold of the block for more than an end. Conceding an awful four late in the game finally put it out of our reach. The partially frozen surface made Fox Lane's back green trickier than usual, but John and Paul adapted well and there just didn't seem to be anywhere we could go to find a bit of joy against them.
After running a pair of the crown green establishment to the wire a couple of weeks earlier, it felt more like a couple of light years ago, such was the disparity of our performance here.

It's not yet an inconceivable mission to find a way out of the relegation places - and I believe we can do it - but next match really has to deliver a positive change to the reading along our points column.
It wasn't ideal that last week's match was cancelled, with all of us going longer than usual without a roll. Since I acquired a winter ticket at Fox Lane, no luck with the weather or green conditions to get a practice in either.
Some guys are playing in two or three Winter Leagues a week and there has to be some value in that. The retired set have the advantage of playing afternoons too. As for the opportunity for a game elsewhere in another evening league, I'd have to be good enough to get the invitation and realistically that's just not going to happen in any sort of foreseeable future.
